Local Food Banks and Women’s Shelters

Local Food Banks and Women’s Shelters

The Dundas Quarry has a long history of supporting the two local food banks (the Flamborough Food Bank and the Hamilton Food Share), as well as a local women’s shelter (the Strabane’s Women’s Institute) on a yearly basis.

In November 2012, Lafarge Dundas employees spent two days at Mission Services in Hamilton to help prime and paint their recreation room. Mission Services is an organization that provides services to families, women and children who are affected by poverty, abuse and homelessness. The Mission Service focuses not only on crisis response and intervention but also on helping people realize their full potential. The recreation room will be used for activities for those who need assistance for the upcoming holiday season.

During the Christmas holiday season in 2012, Lafarge Dundas was part of a two-week long Lafarge Ontario-wide Food Drive Challenge with a goal of raising 10,000 pounds of food. Lafarge exceeded this goal, generating over 25,000 pounds of non-perishable food and a matching $25,000 cash donation that was donated to twelve local food banks! In the Hamilton area, the Lafarge Dundas site, with support from our local community, was able to collect 750 pounds of gently used clothing for the Hamilton Mission Services, and 860 pounds of food with an additional $1400 cash donation for the Hamilton Food Share and Flamborough Food Bank. Representatives from Hamilton Mission Services and Hamilton Food Share were on hand on December 7, during the official weigh-in ceremony at Lafarge Dundas.
